In accordance with the recommendations of the “Committee on Maritime Education and Training” (COMET), (Committee set up by the Govt. of India), a Trust named “Maritime Training and Research Foundation” has been set up by MASSA Members to receive employer’s contribution and disburse the same as required towards Maritime Training.
In furtherance of objectives of the Trust, MASSA has established modern training institutions of its own at Chennai, Tamil Nadu called MASSA Maritime Academy (MMA) and in Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra named MASSA Maritime Academy (MMA) for the purpose of offering Merchant Marine Competency Courses for Nautical and Engineering Departments.

MMA – Navi Mumbai was set up by the Training Committee of MTRF whose members were:- Capt. N. A. Hiranandani as Chairman, Capt. E. B. Pereira, late Mr. K. C. Gupta, Capt. S. M. Halbe, Capt. L. J. Mistry, Capt S. S. Jairam, Capt. A. Achuthan and ABLE Enterprises and Management Services Pvt Ltd.
The present Principal is Capt. Anand M. Shingatgeri
The academy also conducts various Post Sea courses for second mates, first mates and Masters examinations competency courses and class IV on engineering side and various modular courses such as RADAR & ARPA, RANSCO, Ship Manoeuvring, Liquid Cargo Handling, ECDIS, Engine Room and Combustion and Various value courses.

MMA – Chennai was set up by the the Merger of MMA with Interface Aacdemy and by a Training Committee of MTRF whose members were:- Capt. N. A. Hiranandani as Chairman, Capt. E. B. Pereira, late Mr. K. C. Gupta, Capt. S. M. Halbe, Capt. L. J. Mistry, Capt S. S. Jairam, Mr G Lazar
They presently conduct Class IV , various Post sea courses and class II along with Simulator training.
MMA Chennai is headed by Dr. (Capt) S. Bhardwaj.
Both these academies reports to the Governing Council which meets 6 times a year
